Hi
Any ideas what could be causing this problem.
On my old windows machine I have a asus p5k-e wifi mb with 2.6 duel core processor 4 gig 800 and 2 sata 500 gig barracuda hds.
Format windows 7 by running windows setup CD
Sounds like a good start. Thing is after windows copies over temp files and u get the setup welcome box it takes around 10 mins before the language box shows then another 10 min or so for the upgrade or custom install box shows. All very strange as I can usually format and install windows 7 easy in 40 mins or so. Once you get past the customise box it takes another 10 mins or so before it shows the install location box. Here there is no c:\ only an X boot drive and what was the c tag is now the cdrom. SO basically windows cannot find the hard drive even though its physically there, picked in in CMOS, made to be second boot during format process, dvdrom 1st.
I tried setting cmos to default settings and rebooting. Once u get the windows logo screen goes blank and reboots. I changed cable from drive to board and used a different power connector. Still the same, windows will not boot. I changed HD for a spare linux drive I have and it booted fine with no problems. So me thinking its a CMOS issues does not make too much sence when u can boot a linux drive.
I made another drive bootable by installing windows 7 on a different machine, took less than 30 mins from boot to surfing. I then attached this drive thinking it will boot, it does not. Keeps rebooting. So to summaries, during windows install the computer forgets it has a c drive and cannot find a location to install windows too. If u boot machine with windows drive preinstalled it reboots and continues to do so until u turn off machine.
I discharged CMOS removed jummer from pin 1-2 and put it on pin 2-3 and removed battery. Rebooted machine set CMOS to default and tried again. Still the same thing.
I think I have overlooked something very simple and its staring me in the face. So I am giving it a rest for a few hours and come back to it later. Hardware wise there is nothing wrong with process, memory or any of the drives. I have checked them on another MB and they work fine. The only thing I can think of that I have not tried is flashing the bios. Not sure that that would help as the machine was working ok less than 24 hours ago. If u have any ideas that I might try please let me know.
cheers
